Respond to Incidents Involving Hazardous Materials

The ERGT HAZMAT course equips personnel with the skills and knowledge required to safely handle hazardous materials incidents. Trainees will learn to identify and assess hazards,
develop and implement containment and mitigation plans, and render hazardous materials incidents safe.

In addition, they will gain hands-on experience in selecting, donning, testing, and operating the appropriate personal protective clothing and equipment for managing dangerous goods and hazardous substances.

Learning Outcomes

The expected learning outcomes for this course are:

PUAFIR308 Employ personal protection at a hazardous materials incident

  • Select, don and test personal protective clothing and equipment
  • Work in area of operation
  • Complete operations

PUAFIR324 Render hazardous materials incidents safe

  • Recognise a hazardous materials incident
  • Identify and assess hazards
  • Assist with the development of a plan for mitigation of HAZMAT incident
  • Assist with the implementation of plan for mitigation of a HAZMAT incident
  • Assist with the review of plan

Training Standard Pre-requisites
Evidence of the following prior skills and knowledge must be provided to ERGT for verification prior to course commencement

  • PUAFIR207 Operate breathing apparatus open circuit

ERGT Desired Skills and Knowledge
This course has been designed for existing members of emergency response teams. In order for ERGT to deliver the training and assessment in the timeframe specified for this course, it is recommended (but not mandatory) that trainees have undertaken workplace training covering the skills and knowledge listed below:

  • Workflow hazard identification
  • Emergency response procedures
  • Workplace emergency response drills and exercises
  • Operation of isolation systems
  • Organisational procedures for cleaning and discarding equipment in terms of environmental management and sustainability
  • Potential occupational hazards and control measures
  • Providing emergency care
  • As existing members of emergency response teams, trainees have knowledge related to:
  • Responding to fire emergencies
  • Operate fire extinguishing equipment such as fire hoses, branches and extinguishers
  • Undertaking search and rescue

Medical and Health Standards
A medical certificate is not required for this course, however a health questionnaire and declaration of fitness will be required at course registration. Please contact ERGT for any concerns regarding completion of practical training and assessment requirements and to discuss options for reasonable adjustments.

Trainees must present government-issued photo identification for course registration, and trainees are advised of the following information before enrolment:

Please read the AS/NZS 1715 Appendix B: Facial Seal of Respirators. Competency cannot be achieved without complying with the standard’s requirements. If further clarification is needed, please contact ERGT.

Structure and Assessment
The HAZMAT training course is delivered through classroom presentations, group discussions, practical demonstrations and practical exercises. Trainees will demonstrate their competence through both a written and practical assessment.

Skills Maintenance
In alignment with industry expectations and to ensure ongoing competence and capability ERGT recommends skills maintenance be conducted every 2 years.
