Breathing Apparatus Emergency Response Perth · Melbourne · Darwin · Longford
The purpose of this course is to provide the skills and knowledge needed to operate and maintain breathing apparatus in an irrespirable atmosphere, following the Australian
Standard AS/NZS 1715:2009 on respiratory protective equipment.
This course is for operators who need to wear breathing apparatus during emergency incidents, such as:
- Confined spaces
- Hazardous gases or vapours
- Oxygen-deficient environments
- Other situations that require breathing apparatus
Operators may also use breathing apparatus in emergencies. Consultation with stakeholders has confirmed this competency is used to train Fire and Incident Response Teams.
The course applies to individuals working alone or as part of a team, in coordination with other shift team members and the control room operator..

Ongoing Maintenance of Skills
In alignment with industry expectations and to ensure ongoing competence and capability ERGT recommends skills maintenance be conducted every 2 years.

ERGT Required Prior Courses or Qualifications
ERGT recognises that trainees need a basic understanding of common workplace hazards, risks, and emergency response procedures.
Trainees are advised of the following.
It is recommended that trainees have the following skills and knowledge before attending the course:
- Completion of Company Induction training
- Familiarity with workplace emergency response procedures (including fire extinguishers).
- Understanding of risk assessment processes
If you don’t have these skills and knowledge, ERGT recommends completing the Common Safety Training Program (CSTP), which covers these topics.
ERGT also offers supporting courses, such as First Response to Fire, to help trainees develop the necessary skills. Trainees who are not ready for assessment will not be assessed.
Training Standard Prerequisites
The unit PUAFIR210 Prevent injury is a prerequisite unit for PUAFIR207 Operate breathing apparatus open circuit. Trainees will be trained and assessed in the prerequisite unit as
part of this course. Trainees must be deemed competent in PUAFIR210 Prevent injury before being assessed in PUAFIR207 Operate breathing apparatus open circuit.
Medical Requirements
A medical certificate is not needed for this course; however, trainees must complete a health questionnaire and fitness declaration during registration.
If trainees have concerns about the practical training and assessment requirements, they may contact ERGT to discuss options for reasonable adjustments
