MARF008 – Prevent and respond to fires onboard a vessel
ERGT Australia’s Fire Prevention and Fire Safety training course delivers skills and knowledge required by seafarers to prevent and respond to fires onboard a vessel. This course is one of the short course requirements for the AMSA issued CoST.
The fire and safety training course is designed for seafarers serving in any capacity onboard ships operating in international waters and personnel working in the offshore oil and gas industry.

Learning Outcomes
The expected learning outcomes for the Nationally Recognised Training unit MARF008 Prevent and fight fires on board a vessel are:
- Actively prevent fire
- Prepare response to fire
- Combat fire
- Complete post-fire activities
The STCW standard for fire prevention and firefighting (Table A VI/1-2) outcomes include the ability to:
- Minimise the risk of fire and maintain a state of readiness to respond to emergency situations involving fire
- Fight and extinguish fires
ERGT Desired Skills and Knowledge
In order for ERGT to deliver the training and assessment in the timeframe specified for this course, it is desirable (but not mandatory) that trainees come to the course with a specific range of skills and knowledge as listed:
Skills:
- Maritime experience on coastal or larger vessels
- Emergency Response for vessels at sea
Knowledge:
- Knowledge of ships procedures
- Security arrangements for offshore vessels and platforms

Medical and Health Standards
A medical certificate is not required for this course; however, a health questionnaire and declaration of fitness will be required at course registration. Please contact ERGT for any concerns regarding completion of practical training and assessment requirements and to discuss options for reasonable adjustments.
Additional Requirements
Government-issued photo identification and a valid USI are required for course registration.
Please read the AS/NZS 1715 Appendix B: Facial Seal of Respirators. You will not be able to meet competency if you do not comply with the requirements of the standard. Please contact us if you require further clarification.
Note – AMSA approved certification is an additional cost (not paid by ERGT) when presenting certificate to AMSA.
Structure and Assessment
The MARF008 fire safety training course is a combination of theory and practical training in a simulated workplace setting. The focus is on developing skills and knowledge regarding Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting in a maritime setting. Assessments will occur in both the training room and simulated workplace environment/s. Trainees must demonstrate satisfactory outcomes against all assessment criteria to be deemed competent. Revalidation
It is an AMSA requirement to successfully revalidate Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (STCW Code A-VI/1-2) every 5 years.

Nationally Recognised Training is regulated by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA), which is the national regulator for Australia’s vocational education and training sector.
STCW training delivered in Australia is regulated by AMSA, which is Australia’s national agency responsible for maritime safety.
