Course Overview

The Manage Emergency Incidents course gives learners the practical skills to manage and coordinate the response to a Major Accident Event (MAE) as a leader of an Incident Command Team (ICT). It covers how to assess the magnitude and impact of an incident, gather and coordinate emergency response personnel and resources, direct response activities, and manage internal and external communications during an MAE in accordance with workplace procedures.

Managing emergency incidents is the highest-level emergency management capability required across high-risk industries, where leaders of an Incident Command Team (ICT) are required to take command-and-control of an incident, allocate resources, manage information flow and direct emergency response activities under high-stakes conditions. The 2-day Manage Emergency Incidents (MEI) course delivered at ERGT Australia provides learners with the practical knowledge and hands-on experience required to lead an Incident Command Team during a Major Accident Event (MAE). Designed for leaders of an Incident Command Team and personnel required to deputise in an incident command role, this course focuses on collecting and assessing emergency information, implementing response strategies, liaising with emergency control, coordinating resources and personnel, and assessing response effectiveness in accordance with workplace procedures and legislative requirements.

Through a combination of facilitator-led learning and practical scenario-based exercises in a simulated incident command environment, learners will build the confidence and capability to lead an Incident Command Team, manage information and resources during an incident, and direct emergency response activities in line with industry best practice. Upon successful completion, learners will be capable and confident to manage and coordinate Major Accident Events as a leader of an Incident Command Team, aligned with their workplace emergency response framework.

Learning Objectives

  • By the end of this course, you will be able to:
  • Collect and assess emergency information
  • Implement emergency response strategies
  • Liaise with emergency control
  • Coordinate emergency responses
  • Assess emergency response/actions
  • Undertake post-emergency evaluation

Prerequisites

Training Pre-requisites:

There are no pre-requisites from the training standard for this course.

What to expect

Learner Support:

  • Learner wellbeing for this course is supported through measures that recognise the cognitive and psychological demands of senior incident management training. As the course involves taking command of simulated incident scenarios, processing complex information under time pressure, and directing response activities in a structured incident command environment, ERGT implements support strategies that prioritise learner safety, confidence and readiness. This ensures learners can fully participate in all components without compromising their wellbeing or readiness to lead.

Physical Wellbeing Support:

  • Trainers monitor learners during scenario-based exercises for signs of fatigue or difficulty sustaining attention across the 2-day program.
  • Scheduled breaks are incorporated to manage cognitive load during intensive command and control exercises.

Psychological & Emotional Wellbeing Support:

  • Trainers provide clear pre-scenario briefings outlining what to expect during incident command exercises, including the level of pressure, time constraints and decision-making demands.
  • Learners experiencing discomfort or uncertainty when taking command of simulated incident scenarios are supported through additional guidance, mentoring or alternative scenario sequencing where appropriate.
  • Post-scenario debriefs are conducted to review decisions, address stress reactions and reinforce constructive learning across both training days.

Cognitive Support for Safety-Critical Tasks:

  • Gradual progression from simple to complex incident scenarios, allowing learners to build command capability incrementally.
  • Structured decision-making models, command frameworks and communication protocols introduced early to reduce cognitive overload during live scenarios.
  • Opportunities to rehearse command, coordination and communication tasks before executing them in full-scale simulated incidents.
