The Fire Team Member Skills Maintenance course at ERGT Australia refreshes your ability to respond to workplace fires and emergencies. This hands-on training keeps your skills current in using breathing apparatus and fire control equipment.

The 1-day Fire Team Member Skills Maintenance course at ERGT Australia is designed to help learners refresh and maintain their skills and confidence in emergency fire response. This course focuses on practical application of fire control techniques, team coordination, and breathing apparatus use in high-risk workplace scenarios.

Skills maintenance is critical in environments where effective fire response can save lives and protect assets. This program ensures participants remain competent and confident to operate safely in emergency situations. It is recommended that learners already hold the following skills or their equivalent:

MSMWHS216 Operate breathing apparatus
PMAWHS213 Undertake fire control and emergency rescue

An ERGT-approved Skills Maintenance course covering these competencies

Participants must meet medical and fitness requirements to safely use breathing apparatus.

On successful demonstration of all the required performance criteria learners will be issued with a Certificate of Currency in: Fire Team Member which includes:
Operate Breathing Apparatus
Undertake Fire Control and Emergency Rescue
This course covers the following modules:
Review of breathing apparatus principles, pre-use checks, and operations
Fire team response procedures and role responsibilities
Fire behaviour, classes of fire, and extinguishing techniques
Emergency rescue operations and casualty management
Team communication and safety procedures in live fire conditions

This course is delivered through a blend of:

Facilitator-led classroom sessions to review fire behaviour, firefighting techniques, and emergency procedures.

Hands-on practical training using firefighting equipment and breathing apparatus in controlled live-fire environments.

Scenario-based exercises simulating realistic workplace fire and emergency conditions.

Performance-based assessments to confirm continued competence in fire team operations and emergency response tasks.
The 1-day Fire Team Member Skills Maintenance course at ERGT Australia is designed for learners who are active members of emergency response teams in high-risk industries such as oil and gas, maritime, or resources. This refresher program is intended for workers who need to maintain competence in fire control and emergency response.
Participants are recommended to already hold skills in:

MSMWHS216 Operate breathing apparatus

PMAWHS213 Undertake fire control and emergency rescue

or

An ERGT-approved Skills Maintenance course covering these competencies

Learners must be physically capable of operating breathing apparatus, handling fire control equipment, and performing emergency tasks in realistic scenarios.
Learners must be able to access and navigate a digital device to log in and access the course materials. Support for leaners is available on request. More information is available on our website.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
Conduct pre-donning checks and tests on breathing apparatus
Operate breathing apparatus
Conclude operations
Respond to identified fire emergencies
Deploy fire emergency equipment
Undertake search and rescue of affected areas

Prerequisites

Government issued photo identification
Protective Clothing & Footwear – For courses with practical components, overalls/long pants and safety boots must be worn. If you don’t have your own, ERGT can provide these for you on the day.
Please bring a change of clean clothing, you will be required to shower and change after your internal firefighting training.
Health & Fitness:
A medical certificate is not required for this course; however, a health questionnaire and declaration of fitness will be required at course registration. Please contact ERGT for any concerns regarding completion of practical training and assessment requirements.
Respiratory Standards:
Under respiratory standard AS/NZS 1715 Appendix B: Facial Seal of Respirators must be adhered to. You must be clean shaven to achieve an effective seal. If you’re unsure about this requirement, contact ERGT before your course.

What to expect

Free Parking at all ERGT facilities
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) – Any additional PPE required for your course will be supplied by ERGT on the day.
Lunch for Full-Day Courses – Lunch is provided. Please let us know at least 24 hours in advance if you have any allergies or specific dietary requirements.

Smoking outside the designated smoking area
Singlets, shorts, clothing displaying offensive slogans/images, open toed shoes, high heels
