Course Overview

The Provide First Aid – Blended Delivery (PFA_BD) course gives learners the practical skills to respond to medical emergencies, perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and provide first aid to a casualty in line with Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines. Delivered through a combination of online learning and a 1-day face-to-face practical session, this course covers how to recognise and respond to emergency situations, apply appropriate first aid procedures, perform CPR using an automated external defibrillator (AED), communicate incident details, and review the response in accordance with national first aid guidelines and workplace procedures.

Providing first aid and performing CPR are essential life support and first aid skills required across all industries, workplaces and community settings, where the ability to respond quickly and effectively to a medical emergency can be critical to casualty outcomes. The Provide First Aid – Blended Delivery course delivered at ERGT Australia combines self-paced online learning (appx 4 hours) with a 1-day face-to-face practical session to provide learners with the practical knowledge and hands-on experience required to respond to medical emergencies. Designed for workers, supervisors, and individuals seeking nationally recognised first aid and CPR skills, this course focuses on emergency situation assessment, scene safety, casualty assessment, CPR for adults, children and infants, AED operation, management of common medical conditions and injuries, and incident reporting and review in accordance with ARC guidelines and workplace procedures.

Through a combination of online theoretical learning and facilitator-led practical training in a controlled environment, learners will build the confidence and capability to recognise emergencies, apply first aid procedures, perform CPR with the use of an AED, manage common injuries and medical conditions, and communicate incident details effectively in line with national first aid standards. Upon successful completion, learners will be capable and confident to respond to medical emergencies and provide first aid in workplace and community settings.

Prior Skills & Knowledge

Training Standards Pre-requisites

There are no pre-requisites from the training standard for this course.

Online Learning completed prior to face-to-face training:

The online learning component of this training forms a mandatory requirement of the course and is designed to prepare learners for face-to-face practical training and assessment activities.  All learners are required to complete the online learning component prior to attending the face-to-face practical training.

What to expect

Learner Support:

  • Learner wellbeing for this course is supported through measures that recognise the practical and cognitive demands of first aid and CPR training. As the course involves performing simulated emergency scenarios, kneeling for sustained CPR compressions, and applying first aid procedures to simulated casualties, ERGT implements support strategies that prioritise learner safety, confidence and readiness. This ensures learners can fully participate in all practical components without compromising their wellbeing or readiness to respond.

Physical Wellbeing Support:

  • Trainers monitor learners during practical activities for signs of fatigue or difficulty sustaining CPR compressions on the floor.
  • Scheduled breaks are incorporated between practical activities to support recovery and manage physical demands of CPR and casualty management.
  • Learners are encouraged to disclose any physical concerns (e.g. knee discomfort, fatigue, restricted movement) so adjustments can be made to participation.

Psychological & Emotional Wellbeing Support:

  • Trainers provide clear pre-activity briefings to prepare learners for simulated emergency scenarios, including what to expect and the level of realism involved.
  • Learners experiencing discomfort or distress when responding to simulated medical emergencies are supported through additional guidance, alternative scenario sequencing or reassurance where appropriate.
  • Post-activity debriefs are conducted to reinforce learning, address concerns and build confidence in safe first aid and CPR practices.

Cognitive Support for Safety-Critical Tasks:

  • Structured online delivery of first aid principles, ARC guidelines, CPR techniques and incident response procedures prior to practical application.
  • Step-by-step demonstrations of CPR, AED use, casualty management, and first aid for common medical conditions and injuries.
  • Use of consistent terminology, demonstrations and reinforcement of key steps to support memory retention and recall during practical activities.
