Course Overview

The AMSA Certificate of Safety Training (CoST) is the mandatory minimum course required to work on vessels in international waters. This five-day course teaches learners the basic safety skills every seafarer needs.
ERGT’s AMSA-approved CoST course qualifies you to work on Australian vessels and is recognised worldwide.

The STCW AMSA Certificate of Safety Training (CoST) is the essential 5-day training course for anyone starting a career in the maritime industry.

Delivered at ERGT’s training centres, regulated by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), this course provides learners with the skills, knowledge and certification required to safely work at sea. Successful completion results in the Certificate in Basic Safety Training, a STCW-compliant outcome recognised globally.

The course includes the following mandatory safety units: 

  • Personal Survival Techniques - STCW Reg VI/1 and Code Section A-VI/1, Table A-VI/1-1
  • Security Awareness Training - STCW Reg VI/6 and Code Section A-VI/6 paragraph 4, Table A-VI/6-1
  • Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting - STCW Reg VI/1 and Code Section A-VI/1, Table A-VI/1-2
  • Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities - STCW Reg VI/1 and Code Section A-VI/1, Table A-VI/1-4

This course combines classroom learning with practical, hands-on activities such as survival drills and firefighting.

  • Respond calmly and effectively to a range of emergency situations
  • Work safely, responsibly and collaboratively with other crew members

What to expect

Elementary First Aid (EFA) Requirement

This course is AMSA approved. To have your certificate endorsed with AMSA you must also hold a valid Elementary First Aid (EFA) certificate.
To meet this requirement learners will need to provide ERGT with an existing certificate,
If you hold a HLTAID011 Provide First Aid (or equivalent), issued within the past three years, you can submit it to ERGT (info@ergt.com.au) for verification before your course. Once verified, an AMSA-approved Elementary First Aid Certificate will be issued alongside your CoST qualification upon completion of your course.

Applying to AMSA upon completing your Certificate of Safety Training.

Once you have successfully completed your course, you must lodge an application with AMSA using the Seafarer Form 419. To apply for your endorsement, you will need to submit the following certificates issued by ERGT:
1. Certificate of Safety Training (Basic Safety Training)
2. Elementary First Aid (EFA)
Please note: AMSA will not accept general first aid certificates (e.g. HLTAID011) as part of your application. You must submit the AMSA-approved Elementary First Aid (EFA) certificate provided by ERGT.

Endorsement and Validity

If you are completing ERGT’s Certificate of Safety Training (CoST) course for the first time, you are required to apply for endorsement with the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) before you can work at sea.
Individuals are required to Complete AMSA form, which is AMSA’s official application form used to apply for a range of maritime certificates, including your initial CoST.

Upon completion of your AMSA 419 Form, learners with need to gather the following documents to lodge their application:

  • Certificate of Safety Training (CoST/STCW 95) – issued by ERGT
  • Elementary First Aid (EFA) – issued by ERGT
    (Note: you do not need to include your original Provide First Aid certificate)
  • Valid photo ID – see AMSA Form 419 for accepted types

 
To successfully lodge your application, you must print the form single sided and take the required documents listed above to an AMSA approved Australia Post outlet (check the AMSA website)
Staff will:

  • Witness your signature
  • Verify your documents
  • Take your photo
  • Collect the applicable AMSA fee (payable at the time of lodgement)
  • Submit your application to AMSA on your behalf
