Course Overview

Build the skills to safely carry out helicopter refuelling in offshore environments. Learn procedures for hot refuelling, emergency response, and landing zone safety in this hands-on course.

ERGT’s one day Helicopter Refuelling (HREF) course is designed for learners working offshore who are responsible for refuelling helicopters during landings and departures. This training focuses on hot refuelling procedures, emergency actions, and safety requirements around helicopter operations.

Whether you’re a Helicopter Landing Officer (HLO), an HLO Assistant, or someone taking on new responsibilities, this course gives you the practical know-how to safely and confidently manage refuelling tasks in dynamic environments like offshore platforms or remote airstrips.

On successful demonstration of all the required performance criteria learners will be issued with a Certificate of Training and Assessment in:
Helicopter Refueling.
Helicopter refuelling equipment, fuel types, and contamination risks
Personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety measures
Hot refuelling process and operational checklists
Grounding procedures and static electricity control
Emergency response drills and hazard management
Communications and coordination with flight crew

Training is delivered in a face-to-face format and includes:

Classroom-based instruction on safety and refuelling systems

Hands-on practice in a simulated helideck environment

Trainer-led group discussions and problem-solving scenarios

Skills assessments to confirm competency in safe refuelling operations
The Helicopter Refueling course at ERGT Australia is designed for learners involved in Helicopter Operations on Offshore or Remote Sites, including Helicopter Landing Officers (HLOs) and HLO Assistants. This course is particularly suited for learners with prior experience in Offshore Helicopter Operations, who are responsible for safely managing helicopter refueling procedures in compliance with operational and safety protocols.

Delivered over 1-day and providing practical, hands-on training to ensure learners understand safe refueling practices, hazard identification, and risk management. Learners must be physically capable of performing refueling duties and working in outdoor, operational environments.

Learners must have basic Language, Literacy, Numeracy, and Digital (LLND) skills to understand safety procedures and complete assessments. Learners must be able to access and navigate a digital device to log in and access the course materials. Support for leaners is available on request. More information is available on our website.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:
Operation of fuel reception into storage from ships
Providing quality control of fuel from both bulk storage and drums
Fueling helicopters using cabinet equipment and drums
Maintaining equipment used in fuelling helicopters
Relevant guidance documentation

Prerequisites

Government issued photo identification
Protective Clothing & Footwear – For courses with practical components, overalls/long pants and safety boots must be worn. If you don’t have your own, ERGT can provide these for you on the day.
Learners attending the course should be qualified as an HLO or HLO’s assistant, preferably with experience in offshore helicopter operations.

Health & Fitness:
A medical certificate is not required for this course; however, a health questionnaire and declaration of fitness will be required at course registration. Please contact ERGT for any concerns regarding completion of practical training and assessment requirements.

What to expect

Free Parking at all ERGT facilities
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) – Any additional PPE required for your course will be supplied by ERGT on the day.
All necessary equipment and accessories to practice and complete assessment.
Lunch for Full-Day Courses – Lunch is provided. Please let us know at least 24 hours in advance if you have any allergies or specific dietary requirements.
