Course Overview

The OPITO Escape Chute Training (5770) is a short, practical course designed to give offshore personnel the skills and confidence to safely descend an escape chute during an emergency evacuation. Escape chutes are an important evacuation method used on offshore facilities and vessels worldwide, and knowing how to use them correctly can save lives.

The OPITO Escape Chute Training (5770) course at ERGT Australia teaches offshore learners how to safely descend an escape chute in an emergency. This OPITO-approved course builds confidence through hands-on practice and meets international safety requirements for offshore operations.

This course runs for 2 hours and meets the requirements of the Offshore Petroleum Industry Training Organisation (OPITO).

There are no academic prerequisites or medical requirements to attend; however, learners should be physically capable of climbing to platform height and descending the chute unaided.

Learning Objectives

  • Enter the escape chute safely using the correct body posture.
  • Complete a controlled descent through the escape chute
  • Exit the escape chute correctly onto a collection raft or platform
  • Clear the egress point at the base of the escape chute by moving out of the way of descending personnel

What to expect

Learner Support

Learner wellbeing for this course is supported through measures that recognise the physical and psychological demands of escape chute training in a controlled environment. As the course involves climbing to platform height and descending an escape chute, ERGT implements support strategies that prioritise learner safety, confidence and readiness. This ensures learners can safely participate in all practical components without compromising their wellbeing or safety.

Physical Wellbeing Support

  • Trainers monitor learners during practical activities for signs of fatigue, restricted movement or difficulty when climbing or descending.
  • Learners are instructed in correct body posture, hand positioning and descent control prior to practical activities.
  • Learners are encouraged to disclose any physical concerns (e.g. fatigue, minor injury, restricted movement, or difficulty with heights) so adjustments can be made to participation.

Psychological & Emotional Wellbeing Support

  • Trainers provide clear pre-activity briefings outlining what to expect during the escape chute descent, including safety controls in place.
  • Learners experiencing discomfort or anxiety when working at height or entering the chute are supported through additional guidance and the opportunity to observe before participating.
  • Post-activity debriefs are conducted to reinforce learning, address concerns and build confidence in safe escape chute use.
