Course Overview

ERGT Australia’s OPITO Escape Chute Training (5770) teaches offshore learners how to safely descend an escape chute in an emergency. This OPITO-approved course builds confidence and meets international safety requirements.

ERGT Australia’s OPITO Escape Chute Training (5770) is a short, practical course designed to give offshore personnel the skills and confidence to safely descend an escape chute during an emergency evacuation. Escape chutes are a important evacuation method used on offshore facilities and vessels worldwide, and knowing how to use them correctly can save lives.

This course runs for 2 hours and meets the requirements of the Offshore Petroleum Industry Training Organisation (OPITO).

There are no academic prerequisites or medical requirements to attend; however, learners should be physically capable of climbing to platform height and descending the chute unaided.

Certification:
On successful demonstration of the learning outcomes you will be issued the following OPITO Digital certification:
Record of Achievement in OPITO approved Escape Chute Training (5770)
Learners will receive a digital Certificate via email on completion of the course.
Offshore emergency escape procedures
Escape chute design, setup, and function
Pre-descent safety checks and donning PPE
Hands-on chute descent practice
Post-descent actions and group evacuation procedures

This course is delivered through a blend of:

Facilitator-led safety briefing and instruction on escape chute procedures.

Demonstration of safe techniques by experienced trainers.

Hands-on practical training involving a real escape chute descent.

Performance-based assessment to confirm competence in chute evacuation.
The OPITO Escape Chute Training (5770) is best suited for learners that are:

Offshore facility and vessel personnel who may need to use escape chutes in an emergency.

New or experienced workers in oil and gas, maritime, or resources industries where escape chutes are installed.

Learners seeking OPITO-approved training to meet international safety and compliance standards.

This course runs for 2 hours and does not require prior learning or prerequisites. It is suitable as an entry-level or refresher product. Learners must be physically capable of climbing to a platform height and descending a chute unaided.

Learners must have basic Language, Literacy, Numeracy, and Digital (LLND) skills to understand safety procedures and complete assessments. Learners must be able to access and navigate a digital device to log in and access the course materials. Support for leaners is available on request. More information is available on our website.

Learning Objectives

The expected learning outcomes from the OPITO Escape Chute training are the ability to successfully demonstrate the following:
Entering the escape chute safely using the correct body posture
Completing a controlled descent through the escape chute
Exiting the escape chute correctly onto a collection raft/platform
On completion of the escape chute descent, clearing the egress point at the base of the escape chute by moving out of the way of descending personnel

Prerequisites

Government issued photo identification
Protective Clothing & Footwear – For courses with practical components, overalls/long pants and safety boots must be worn. If you don’t have your own, ERGT can provide these for you on the day.
Health & Fitness:
Training and assessment activities may include physically demanding and potentially stressful elements. All learners who participate in this course must be physically/mentally capable of full participation.
A medical certificate is not required for this course; however, a health questionnaire and declaration of fitness will be required at course registration. Please contact ERGT for any concerns regarding completion of practical training and assessment requirements.

Skills Maintenance:
To maintain this certificate, it is an OPITO requirement to revalidate every 4 years.
There is no specific refresher for ECHUTE, the initial course is required every 4 years.
OPITO allow you to attend training up to three months prior to expiry without loss of validity.

Booking ECHUTE with BOSIET/FOET
ECHUTE can be completed as a standalone course or in combination with a BOSIET or FOET. If you wish to add Escape Chute (ECHUTE) training in combination to a BOSIET/FOET enrolment, please contact ERGT directly.

What to expect

Free Parking at all ERGT facilities
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) – Any additional PPE required for your course will be supplied by ERGT on the day.
Showers & Change Facilities
Alcohol, illicit drugs
Smoking outside the designated smoking area
Singlets, shorts, clothing displaying offensive slogans/images, open toed shoes, high heels

No - OPITO certification is uploaded to a Learner’s profile in the OPITO HUB which can be accessed via the OPITO Train-r app
Yes, it can be added to your BOSIET or FOET booking to be completed in the same day. Please contact ERGT to make an enrolment for you.
No, although you will be required to be able to float or tread water, but you will always have a buoyancy aid (lifejacket) on during these exercises.
A current industry-approved or HUET medical is required for participation. Please refer to this link for more information: HUET Medical
Medicals must be provided to ERGT Australia as soon as possible after enrolling, but no later than 48 hours prior to your course commencing. Your medical can be submitted through your Learner Onboarding or emailed to info@ergt.com.au.
No. You must complete BOSIET with CA-EBS again.
TBOSIET/TFOET: Tropical waters only
BOSIET/FOET with CA-EBS: Cold & tropical waters, accepted internationally
