Course Overview

The Command the Operation of Survival Craft Swing Arm Skills Maintenance course is designed for personnel who need to validate their operational readiness in commanding and operating Swing Arm davit-launched Totally Enclosed Motor Propelled Survival Craft (TEMPSC) in emergency evacuations. Over one day of intensive practical training at ERGT Australia's specialist marine training facility located in Fremantle, learners validate skills in muster control, organised TEMPSC deployment, leadership and welfare of personnel, hazard control, and emergency problem response the capabilities that define effective survival craft command.

ERGT Skills Maintenance programs are intended for people who have already completed formal training in a specific area and continue to use those skills regularly in their job. These programs are designed to help workers validate their existing skills and knowledge, ensuring they remain competent and up to date in the workplace. Because of this, the program does not teach skills from the beginning and is not designed to fill major gaps in knowledge. It is also not suitable as a catch-up or remedial course for people who have not been regularly using these skills.

To get the most value from the program and to meet the required standard, learners need to already have a high level of skill and knowledge in survival craft operations and command. Learners who cannot demonstrate this baseline may be unable to safely participate and may be required to complete relevant training before attending. If you are unsure whether your experience is suitable, please contact ERGT before enrolling.

This is a non-accredited course. Outcomes are assessed against ERGT Australia's performance standards and, upon successful demonstration of all required performance criteria, learners are issued a Certificate of Currency by ERGT Australia.

What to expect

ERGT Australia's Command the Operation of Survival Craft Swing Arm Skills Maintenance course is delivered over 1-day at ERGT Australia's specialist marine training facility located at our Fremantle Training Annexe. The course is focused on practical validation of existing survival craft command skills, and learners should expect to spend the majority of the day in the marine training environment, operating swing arm davit-launched TEMPSC in realistic scenario-based exercises.

Facilitators are experienced maritime safety practitioners who will conduct pre-exercise briefings before each practical activity. Scenario exercises are structured to replicate realistic emergency muster and TEMPSC deployment conditions.

Learner Support

ERGT Australia is committed to providing a training environment where every learner can engage fully and safely. The following support is available across three areas.

Physical Support

Learners with an injury, physical limitation, or health condition that may affect their ability to participate in practical exercises in a marine environment are encouraged to declare this at registration. ERGT Australia will work with you to identify reasonable adjustments where possible. Some practical tasks including boarding and operating TEMPSC have non-negotiable safety requirements that cannot be modified; where this is the case, ERGT Australia will advise you clearly before the course begins. No medical certificate is required, but a health questionnaire and declaration of fitness must be completed at registration.

Psychological Support

Learners who are concerned about working in a marine environment or participating in simulated emergency evacuation scenarios are encouraged to contact ERGT Australia before enrolment. Facilitators provide clear pre-exercise briefings before each practical activity and are experienced in supporting learners through the demands of marine safety training. Learners may speak with their facilitator at any time if they are finding a particular activity challenging. No learner will be required to continue an activity that poses a genuine risk to their psychological safety.

Cognitive Support

This course focuses on the validation of existing survival craft command knowledge and skills across a single day. Learners with recent operational experience commanding TEMPSC will consolidate their performance more effectively than those who have not been actively using these skills. To support learners across the course, ERGT Australia delivers content with operational procedures and safety requirements reviewed in the classroom before practical application. Facilitators use consistent terminology and step-by-step briefings before each exercise, and scenario activities build progressively from individual procedural tasks toward integrated emergency deployment. Learners who need additional time with a particular procedure or task are encouraged to speak with their facilitator.
