Course Overview

The Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) course gives learners the practical skills to recognise and respond to cardiac emergencies and perform CPR in line with Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines. The Australian Resuscitation Council recommends CPR currency be refreshed every 12 months, and this course provides both initial CPR training and ongoing currency for learners required to respond to cardiac emergencies. It covers how to recognise and assess emergency situations, perform CPR on adults and infants, operate an automated external defibrillator (AED), communicate incident details, and review the response in accordance with ARC guidelines and workplace procedures.

Performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation is an essential life support skill required across all industries, workplaces and community settings, where the ability to respond quickly and effectively to a cardiac emergency can be critical to casualty outcomes. The half-day Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation course delivered at ERGT Australia provides learners with the practical knowledge and hands-on experience required to perform CPR and operate an AED in the event of a cardiac emergency. Designed for workers, supervisors, and individuals seeking initial or refresher CPR training, this course focuses on emergency situation recognition, application of the DRSABCD action plan, CPR techniques for adults and infants, AED operation, unconscious casualty management, and incident communication and reporting in accordance with ARC guidelines and workplace procedures.

Through a combination of facilitator-led learning and practical activities in a controlled environment, learners will build the confidence and capability to recognise cardiac emergencies, perform CPR with the use of an AED, manage an unconscious casualty, and communicate incident details effectively in line with national resuscitation standards. Upon successful completion, learners will be capable and confident to respond to cardiac emergencies and perform CPR in workplace and community settings.

Learning Objectives

  • By the end of this course, learners will be able to:
  • Respond to an emergency situation
  • Perform CPR procedures
  • Communicate details of the incident

Recommendation

It is recommended by the Australian Recusation Council that this course if refreshed every 12 months.

What to expect

Learner Support:

  • Learner wellbeing for this course is supported through measures that recognise the practical and cognitive demands of CPR training. As the course involves performing simulated emergency scenarios, kneeling for sustained CPR compressions, and applying CPR and AED procedures to simulated casualties, ERGT implements support strategies that prioritise learner safety, confidence and readiness. This ensures learners can fully participate in all practical components without compromising their wellbeing or readiness to respond.

Physical Wellbeing Support:

  • Trainers monitor learners during practical activities for signs of fatigue or difficulty sustaining CPR compressions on the floor.
  • Scheduled breaks are incorporated between practical activities to support recovery and manage physical demands of CPR.
  • Learners are encouraged to disclose any physical concerns (e.g. knee discomfort, fatigue, restricted movement) so adjustments can be made to participation.

Psychological & Emotional Wellbeing Support:

  • Trainers provide clear pre-activity briefings to prepare learners for simulated emergency scenarios, including what to expect and the level of realism involved.
  • Learners experiencing discomfort or distress when responding to simulated cardiac emergencies are supported through additional guidance, alternative scenario sequencing or reassurance where appropriate.
  • Post-activity debriefs are conducted to reinforce learning, address concerns and build confidence in safe CPR practices.

Cognitive Support for Safety-Critical Tasks:

  • Structured delivery of CPR principles, ARC guidelines, AED operation and emergency response procedures prior to practical application.
  • Step-by-step demonstrations of CPR techniques for adults and infants, AED use, and unconscious casualty management.

Use of consistent terminology, demonstrations and reinforcement of key steps to support memory retention and recall during practical activities.
