Course Overview
The STCW Certificate of Competency Continued Competence (CoC CC) course at ERGT Australia is a 2-day refresher seafarers renewing their AMSA Certificate of Competency (CoC) It refreshers learners in advanced fire fighting, survival craft and personal survival skills for seafarers renewing their certification.
Eligibility: Qualifying sea service as per AMSA requirements, either 12 months in the last 5 years or 3 months in the last 6 months.
The STCW Certificate of Competency Continued Competence (CoC CC) course provides seafarers with the opportunity to maintain their emergency preparedness in line with current AMSA requirements. This course meets the refresher requirements for those to demonstrate continued competence in critical emergency response areas.
Delivered through hands-on, practical training, the course reinforces the skills and knowledge required to safely respond to shipboard emergencies—including survival at sea, firefighting, and advanced emergency management.
This training ensures you remain job-ready, safety-compliant, and confident to perform your duties on board.
This course is essential for demonstrating up-to-date capabilities in responding to emergencies at sea. It includes physically demanding scenarios involving water-based survival and live-fire exercises. Learners must meet AMSA’s qualifying sea service requirements (12 months in the last 5 years or 3 months in the last 6 months.)

Learning Objectives
- The course outcomes include the training outcomes required by AMSA for the provision of a Certificate of Competency – Continued Competence. These include:
- STCW standard for Personal Survival Techniques (Reg VI/1, Code Section A-VI/1, Table A-VI/1-1): Survive at sea in the event of ship abandonment
- STCW standard for Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (Reg VI/1, Code Section A-VI/1, Table A-VI/1-2): Minimise the risk of fire and maintain a state of readiness to respond to emergency situations involving fire: Fight and extinguish fires
- STCW Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats other than Fast Rescue Boats (Code Table A-VI/2-1): Operate off-load and on-load release devices for survival craft: Properly reset release devices for survival craft: Use signalling equipment
- STCW Advanced Fire Fighting (Code Section A-VI/3 paragraphs 1–4, Table A-VI/3): Control firefighting operations aboard ships: Organise and train fire parties: Inspect and service fire-detection and fire-extinguishing systems and equipment
Structure & Assessment
Prerequisites
There are no training standard pre-requisites required to be collected by ERGT Australia. However to refresh your competency with AMSA you will be required to meet all of the below requirements when lodging a formal application with AMSA using the Seafarer form 419.
STCW Certificate of Competency for International Waters (Master, Deck and Engineer Officers)
Qualifying sea service either 12 months in the last 5 years or 3 months in the last 6 months.
If you do not hold the required sea service, you will need to revalidate through an alternate process. This process differs depending on the type of Certificate of Continued Competency you hold. Please contact ERGT to confirm your individual requirements.
