AMSA Sea Service Requirement

This course is designed for seafarers who hold qualifying sea service for STCW CoP revalidation. AMSA requires that you hold one of the following to be eligible for the refresher revalidation pathway:

365 days sea service in the last 5 years, or

90 days sea service in the last 6 months

Your sea service must be on vessels 24 meters or above, and in duties appropriate to that certificate.

Seafarers who do not hold qualifying sea service cannot use this course to revalidate and must complete a different pathway. Contact ERGT Australia before enrolling if you are unsure whether you hold the qualifying sea service required.

AMSA Revalidation Requirements

Completing this course alone does not revalidate your CoC. To revalidate, you must apply to AMSA and provide all required documents. AMSA's revalidation requirements include:

A valid AMSA Certificate of Medical Fitness (Form 303). If your medical has expired, you must complete a new medical assessment before lodging your application.

Your ERGT Australia course completion certificate showing the relevant STCW codes. AMSA does not accept transcripts, attendance records, or Statements of Attainment.

A sea service letter confirming your qualifying sea service, prepared using AMSA's sea service letter template for international seafarers.

Proof of identity (original documents required at Australia Post lodgement).

Any required supporting or ancillary certificates (for example GMDSS, ECDIS) that are current.

Completed AMSA Seafarer Form 419.

Lodgement in person at a participating Australia Post outlet, where your photograph will be taken and the application fee paid.

Allow approximately 28 business days for AMSA to assess a complete application. To maintain your existing expiry date cycle, AMSA recommends lodging your application within six months of your certificate's expiry date. Training Standard Prerequisites

There are no training standard prerequisites required to be collected by ERGT Australia for this course. Entry is based on AMSA's sea service eligibility requirements above.

ERGT Australia's Certificate of Proficiency Continued Competence course is delivered across one and a half days at a purpose-built maritime safety training facility. The course combines facilitator-led instruction with substantial practical time, and learners should expect to spend significant portions of each session in PPE, participating in in-water survival exercises and live-fire scenarios.

Day one focuses on Techniques Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting, including live-fire exercises and firefighting team drills, Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats, including in-water exercises using immersion suits and liferaft procedures. The half day on day two covers Personal Survival. Facilitators are experienced maritime safety practitioners who will brief learners clearly before each practical activity.

Learner Support

ERGT Australia is committed to providing a training environment where every learner can engage fully and safely. The following support is available across three areas.

Physical Support

Learners with an injury, physical limitation, or health condition that may affect their ability to participate in in-water exercises or live-fire practical activities are encouraged to declare this at registration. ERGT Australia will work with you to identify reasonable adjustments where possible. Note that AMSA's revalidation pathway requires completion of all three STCW continued competence elements — where a practical task cannot be modified, ERGT Australia will advise you clearly before the course begins. No medical certificate is required for enrolment with ERGT Australia, but a health questionnaire and declaration of fitness must be completed at registration. A valid AMSA Certificate of Medical Fitness (Form 303) is required when lodging your revalidation application with AMSA.

Psychological Support

Learners who are concerned about in-water survival exercises or live-fire scenarios are encouraged to contact ERGT Australia before enrolment. Facilitators provide clear pre-activity briefings before each practical exercise and are experienced in supporting learners through the demands of maritime safety training. Learners may speak with their facilitator at any time if they are finding a particular activity challenging. No learner will be required to continue an activity that poses a genuine risk to their psychological safety.

Cognitive Support

This course covers three STCW continued competence elements across one and a half days, combining survival techniques with firefighting skills. To support learners in consolidating these capabilities, ERGT Australia structures delivery to establish the underlying knowledge and protocols for each element before moving to practical application. Facilitators use step-by-step demonstration before each practical activity, and scenario exercises build progressively from individual skill refreshers toward integrated team response. Post-exercise debriefs reinforce learning and provide feedback on technical performance. Learners who need additional time with a particular skill or procedure are encouraged to speak with their facilitator.
