Course Overview

The Command the Operation of a Survival Craft - Freefall builds the skills to take control in an emergency at sea. This practical 2 day course teaches learners how to command, launch, and operate a freefall survival craft safely and confidently in real-world conditions.

ERGT’s 2 day Command the Operation of Survival Craft – Freefall course is designed for workers in the offshore oil and gas, resources, and maritime support sectors who may need to take charge during a vessel or facility evacuation.

You’ll develop the hands-on skills to prepare, launch, and operate a freefall lifeboat, lead a crew, and manage real-time emergency conditions. This course is aligned to the Nationally Recognised Unit of Competency PMAWHS312 Command the operation of survival craft.

Upon successful completion learners will be issued with a Statement of Attainment in:
PMAWHS312 Command the operation of survival craft.
The Totally Enclosed Motor Propelled Survival Craft (TEMPSC) launching method used during this course was a freefall, including davit and winch.
Lifeboat systems and safety equipment checks
Launch preparation and crew briefings
Freefall launch procedures and operational control
Propulsion, navigation, and handling of survival craft
Managing emergencies during lifeboat operations
Crew leadership, communication, and survival coordination

This course is delivered through a blend of:

Facilitator-led classroom sessions covering survival craft safety requirements, launch systems, and command responsibilities.

Practical training with freefall survival craft, including preparation, boarding, and safe launch from height.

Scenario-based exercises simulating abandon-ship emergencies, post-launch survival, and command decision-making.

Performance-based assessments to confirm competence in commanding, operating, and managing freefall survival craft.
The Command the Operation of a Survival Craft – Freefall course is designed for seafarers, offshore personnel, and shipboard crew who may be required to command the launch and operation of freefall survival craft in an emergency. It is relevant for those working in the Maritime, Offshore Oil and Gas, and Resource Sectors where freefall lifeboats are installed on vessels or facilities.

This 2-day course develops the knowledge and practical skills needed to prepare, launch, and command a Freefall Survival Craft safely and in compliance with regulatory requirements. Learners will also gain experience in post-launch operations, handling, and recovery.

No formal prerequisites are required to enrol; however, this training is most suited to learners who already hold baseline maritime safety training or have prior experience working in marine or offshore environments.

The course includes physically demanding activities such as boarding survival craft, launching from height, and operating lifeboats in challenging sea conditions. Learners must be physically fit and able to complete all practical tasks

Learners must have basic Language, Literacy, Numeracy, and Digital (LLND) skills to understand safety procedures and complete assessments. Learners must be able to access and navigate a digital device to log in and access the course materials. Support for leaners is available on request. More information is available on our website.

Prerequisites

Government issued photo identification
Protective Clothing & Footwear – For courses with practical components, overalls/long pants and safety boots must be worn. If you don’t have your own, ERGT can provide these for you on the day.
Unique Student Identifier (USI):
You are enrolling in a Nationally Recognised Training (NRT) course.
A Unique Student Identifier (USI) must be provided and verified for NRT. Please refer to http://www.usi.gov.au to create a USI. It is strongly recommended that you grant ERGT permission to access your USI transcript to assist with verification.
ERGT is prohibited by law to issue a Statement of Attainment without a verified USI.
A USI must be provided and verified within 30 days of course completion otherwise an alternative non NRT certificate will be issued.
Training Standards Pre-requisites:
There are no pre-requisites from the training standard for this course.
Health & Fitness:
A medical certificate is not required for this course; however, a health questionnaire and declaration of fitness will be required at course registration. Please contact ERGT for any concerns regarding completion of practical training and assessment requirements.

What to expect

Directions to the Fremantle Training Annex area.
(12 Rous Head Road, North Fremantle )
Follow the signs to Rottnest Ferry Terminal. Please be aware that this is a heavy truck traffic area and extra caution is to be taken when travelling to the centre.
Walking to the centre is not advised.
Unfortunately there is no public transport which takes you directly to the centre, the closest train station is North Fremantle Train Station which is approximately a 5 minute drive away. Please note that at times it is difficult to get a taxi out to the centre, therefore it is recommended that you organise a taxi in advance.
Free Parking at all ERGT facilities
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) – Any additional PPE required for your course will be supplied by ERGT on the day.
Lunch for Full-Day Courses – Lunch is provided. Please let us know at least 24 hours in advance if you have any allergies or specific dietary requirements.
