Confined Space and Height Safety Skills Maintenance

• Confined Space Entry:
• Hazard identification, risk assessment, and permit requirements for confined space entry.
• Atmospheric monitoring procedures and interpretation of monitoring results.
• Selection, inspection, and correct use of confined space entry equipment.
• Safe entry, work within, and exit of a confined space in accordance with applicable procedures.
• Emergency response considerations and exit procedures for confined space operations.
• Height Safety:
• Hazard identification and risk assessment for work at heights.
• Selection, inspection, fit, and correct use of height safety equipment, including harnesses, lanyards, and anchor points.
• Application of fall restraint and fall arrest systems in a simulated work environment.
• Safe ascent, descent, and working at height in accordance with applicable procedures.

This course is delivered through a blend of:

• Facilitator-led classroom sessions reviewing confined space entry and height safety procedures, hazard identification, and safety requirements for both disciplines. 
• Hands-on practical training using industry-standard confined space and height safety equipment in ERGT Australia's purpose-built training environments. 
• Scenario-based exercises simulating confined space entry and height safety tasks in realistic workplace conditions. 
• Performance-based assessments against ERGT Australia's performance standards to confirm ongoing competence across both disciplines.

The Confined Space and Height Safety Skills Maintenance course is designed for workers in industries including oil and gas, resources, mining, and construction where confined space entry and working at heights are routine tasks, and who are required to maintain current competence in both disciplines. It is particularly suited to operational personnel, safety team members, and emergency response team members who regularly work in or around confined spaces and at heights, and who must periodically demonstrate currency in these safety-critical areas.
This course is not appropriate for learners who are new to confined space entry or height safety, or who have not previously completed formal training and assessment in these areas. Learners are expected to arrive with an established level of skill and knowledge across both disciplines and to have been actively using these capabilities in their role.

Participation Requirements

To participate fully in the program, learners should be aware of the following:

Physical Requirements

This is a physically active one-day course involving practical exercises in both confined space and height safety environments. Learners must be able to:

• Don, wear, and operate a safety harness and height safety equipment, including climbing, traversing, and performing tasks while harnessed at height.
• Enter, work within, and exit a confined space, including physical manoeuvring in restricted dimensions while wearing required PPE and atmospheric monitoring equipment.
• Handle and operate confined space entry and height safety equipment throughout practical exercises.
• Sustain physically active participation across a full day of practical training in both disciplines.

A medical certificate is not required; however, a health questionnaire and declaration of fitness will be required at course registration. Learners are encouraged to contact ERGT Australia before the course if they have any concerns about their ability to meet these requirements. Reasonable adjustments will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Psychological Requirements

This course involves working in environments that may present psychological challenges across both disciplines. Learners should be prepared to:

• Work at height using fall restraint and fall arrest systems, which requires composure and focus in an elevated environment. Learners who experience anxiety at heights are encouraged to contact ERGT Australia before enrolment.
• Enter and work within confined spaces, which may trigger discomfort or anxiety in learners who experience claustrophobia or enclosed-space aversion. Learners who have concerns about confined space entry are encouraged to contact ERGT Australia before enrolment.
• Perform practical tasks in both environments under realistic workplace conditions, maintaining focus and composure throughout.

Learners who have concerns about either of these demands are encouraged to speak with ERGT Australia prior to enrolment so that appropriate support can be discussed.

Behavioural Requirements

All learners are required to:

• Follow facilitator instructions and all safety procedures precisely at all times during practical exercises in both confined space and height safety environments.
• Communicate clearly and effectively with team members and facilitators throughout all practical activities.
• Adhere to ERGT Australia's site safety rules and the specific safety protocols for each training discipline.
• Report any health, fitness, or equipment concerns to the facilitator before or immediately during a session.
• Behave professionally and respectfully toward all participants and facilitators throughout the course.

Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital

Learners must have basic Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital (LLND) skills to understand safety procedures and complete assessments.
