Course Overview

The Drive Vehicles under Operational Conditions (DVUOC) course gives learners the practical skills to safely drive and control vehicles during operational response activities, including on and off road in challenging environments. It covers how to prepare a vehicle for operational response, drive the vehicle safely, and monitor traffic, road and terrain under operational conditions in accordance with workplace procedures.

Driving vehicles under operational conditions is an essential operational driving capability required across high-risk industries, where workers may be required to operate vehicles on and off road during emergency response or operational activities, often in dynamic and challenging environments. The 1-day Drive Vehicles under Operational Conditions course delivered at ERGT Australia provides learners with the practical knowledge and hands-on experience required to safely operate vehicles during operational response activities. Designed for personnel required to operate vehicles in Mining, Resources, and other High-Risk Industries, this course focuses on pre-operational vehicle and equipment checks, cabin drills and start-up procedures, low risk driving techniques, hazard monitoring, and safe vehicle operation in operational terrain in accordance with workplace procedures and traffic regulations.

Through a combination of facilitator-led learning and practical driver training in a controlled environment, learners will build the confidence and capability to prepare a vehicle for operational response, apply low risk driving techniques, monitor traffic and terrain conditions, and respond to hazards during operational driving activities in line with industry best practice. Upon successful completion, learners will be job-ready to drive vehicles under operational conditions as part of their workplace operational responsibilities.

Learning Objectives

  • By the end of this course, you will be able to:
  • Prepare vehicle for operational response
  • Drive the vehicle
  • Monitor traffic, road and terrain under operational conditions

Prerequisites

Training Standard Pre-requisites:

There are no pre-requisites from the training standard for this course.

Prior skills and knowledge

A current Australian driver's licence is an essential certification prerequisite for this course and must be held prior to course commencement. Evidence of a current Australian driver's licence must be provided to ERGT before practical driving activities commence.

Substance Screening

Learners will undergo a Breath Alcohol Content (BAC) test prior to driving vehicles and are required to record a 0.000 reading. Learners who do not meet this requirement will not be permitted to participate in practical driving activities.

What to expect

Learner Support:

  • Learner wellbeing for this course is supported through measures that recognise the practical and cognitive demands of operational driving training. As the course involves practical driving activities, sustained attention and decision-making in operational environments, ERGT implements support strategies that prioritise learner safety, confidence and readiness. This ensures learners can safely participate in all practical components without compromising their wellbeing or safety.

Physical Wellbeing Support:

  • Trainers monitor learners during practical driving sessions for signs of fatigue, distraction or difficulty operating vehicle controls.
  • Scheduled breaks are incorporated between driving activities to support fatigue management.
  • Learners are encouraged to disclose any physical concerns (e.g. fatigue, minor injury or restricted movement) so adjustments can be made to participation.

Psychological & Emotional Wellbeing Support:

  • Trainers provide clear pre-activity briefings to prepare learners for practical driving activities, including expected scenarios, hazard conditions and safety controls.
  • Learners experiencing difficulty sustaining concentration during driving activities are supported through additional guidance, mentoring or alternative scenario sequencing where appropriate.
  • Post-activity debriefs are conducted to reinforce learning, address concerns and build confidence in safe operational driving practices.

Cognitive Support for Safety-Critical Tasks:

  • Structured delivery of low risk driving principles, hazard awareness, traffic regulations and operational driving procedures prior to practical application.
  • Step-by-step demonstrations of vehicle preparation, cabin drills, start-up procedures and operational driving techniques.
  • Use of visual aids, demonstrations and real vehicles to reinforce understanding of safe operational driving practices.
