Course Overview

The Emergency Services Skills Assessment (ESSA) is a practical, standardised evaluation of emergency response skills delivered by ERGT Australia as an endorsed provider for the Australian Institute of Health and Safety (AIHS) Emergency Response certification process. Developed by the Emergency Management Community of Practice (EMCoP), this ESSA provides a consistent, portable benchmark for individuals working in high-risk emergency response roles across the mining and resources sector.

Completing the ESSA is a requirement for AIHS Emergency Response certification at the Emergency Response Officer (ERO) or Emergency Response Leader (ERL) level. The assessment evaluates capability across five emergency response disciplines Breathing Apparatus, Fire Team Operations, Vertical Rescue, Medical Response, and Road Crash Rescue through practical tasks observed by a qualified ERGT assessor.

The ESSA is an assessment not a training course. It does not teach emergency response skills or provide instruction in the assessed disciplines. It is designed for experienced emergency response personnel who already hold current competency across the assessed areas and need to demonstrate and validate that capability against defined industry benchmarks.

Learning Objectives

  • The ESSA is a practical skills and knowledge assessment and does not include training or instruction. Candidates are assessed against industry benchmarks across the following emergency response disciplines:
  • Emergency Services Skills Assessment
  • Breathing Apparatus
  • Responding to Fire Incidents
  • Vertical Rescue
  • Medical Response
  • Road Crash Rescue

Prior Skills & Knowledge

Prior skills and knowledge:

The ESSA is an assessment of existing capability, not a training course. There are no formal entry prerequisites; however, candidates must hold current practical competency in all five assessed disciplines before attending. Candidates who do not hold this level of established, current capability should not enrol in the ESSA they should instead complete the relevant training courses before seeking assessment.

Candidates are strongly encouraged to review the ESSA Guide for Candidates and complete the ESSA Self-Assessment Tool prior to enrolment to confirm their readiness across all five disciplines.

These documents are available through ERGT Australia on request.

What to expect

The ESSA at ERGT Australia is conducted over a 3-hour session at a purpose-built safety training facility. The assessment is structured around practical tasks across five rotating discipline stations, each observed by a qualified ERGT assessor. There is no classroom instruction candidates proceed directly through the assessment stations and are  observed performing practical assessment activities designed to evaluate capability across the five emergency response disciplines.

Following completion of all five discipline stations, a structured debrief is conducted. Candidates receive formal feedback on their performance across each discipline and are informed of their outcome level Seasoned, Satisfactory, or Developing for each area.

Candidates who achieve a Satisfactory or Seasoned outcome in all five disciplines will be issued a co-branded ESSA Certificate. Candidates who receive a Developing outcome in one or more disciplines will be advised on next steps, which may include further training or practice before re-attempting the assessment.

Learner Support

ERGT Australia is committed to providing a fair and supported assessment environment. The following support is available across two areas.

Physical Support

Candidates with an injury, physical limitation, or health condition that may affect their ability to complete any of the five assessed disciplines are encouraged to declare this before enrolling. ERGT Australia will advise you on whether reasonable adjustments are possible for any particular discipline. Note that the physical demands of the ESSA reflect the operational demands of the emergency response roles it assesses some tasks cannot be modified without compromising the validity of the assessment. Where this is the case, ERGT Australia will advise you clearly before the assessment session. No medical certificate is required, but a health questionnaire and declaration of fitness must be completed at registration.

Psychological Support

Candidates who are concerned about performing under assessor observation, or who anticipate difficulty with the pressure of a time-limited skills assessment, are encouraged to contact ERGT Australia before enrolling. Assessors provide a clear briefing before each assessment station and conduct a structured debrief at the end of the session, including constructive feedback on all areas. Candidates may speak with their assessor at any time if they have concerns.

Note: That the ESSA is not a pass/fail assessment. A Developing outcome in any discipline identifies areas where additional experience, practice or development may be beneficial.
