This course delivers the nationally recognised outcome PUAFER008 Confine small emergencies in a facility. It is designed for learners across industries who may be required to operate fire extinguishers or other first response equipment. Learners practice real-life scenarios using workplace fire equipment, building confidence to respond calmly and correctly when an incident occurs.

Upon successful completion learners will be issued with a Statement of Attainment in:
PUAFER008 Confine small emergencies in a facility
Workplace emergency procedures and responsibilities
Fire science basics: fire classes and extinguishing methods
Types of extinguishers and other workplace emergency equipment
Safe and effective use of fire extinguishers
Decision-making and safety when responding to small emergencies
Reporting and follow-up after an incident

This course is delivered through a blend of:

Facilitator-led classroom sessions to explain fire types, extinguisher selection, and safety procedures.

Hands-on practical exercises in a controlled environment to safely practice extinguishing small fires.

Scenario-based activities simulating workplace emergency situations to reinforce skills and decision-making.

Performance-based assessments to confirm competence in using fire extinguishers to contain small emergencies.
The Fire Extinguishers Confine Small Emergencies in a Facility course is designed for workers across all industries who may be called on to respond to small emergencies in the workplace. It is particularly relevant to those responsible for first response actions, emergency wardens, or team members who need to know how to safely operate fire extinguishers and other emergency equipment.

No prior learning is required. Learners should have the physical ability to operate fire extinguishers and respond to emergency scenarios.

Learners must have basic Language, Literacy, Numeracy, and Digital (LLND) skills to understand safety procedures and complete assessments. Learners must be able to access and navigate a digital device to log in and access the course materials. Support for leaners is available on request. More information is available on our website.

Learning Objectives

Prerequisites

Government issued photo identification
Protective Clothing & Footwear – For courses with practical components, overalls/long pants and safety boots must be worn. If you don’t have your own, ERGT can provide these for you on the day.
Unique Student Identifier (USI):
You are enrolling in a Nationally Recognised Training (NRT) course.
A Unique Student Identifier (USI) must be provided and verified for NRT. Please refer to http://www.usi.gov.au to create a USI. It is strongly recommended that you grant ERGT permission to access your USI transcript to assist with verification.
ERGT is prohibited by law to issue a Statement of Attainment without a verified USI.
A USI must be provided and verified within 30 days of course completion otherwise an alternative non NRT certificate will be issued.

Training Pre-requisites:
There are no pre-requisites from the training standard for this course.
Health & Fitness:
A medical certificate is not required for this course; however, a health questionnaire and declaration of fitness will be required at course registration. Please contact ERGT for any concerns regarding completion of practical training and assessment requirements.

What to expect

Free Parking at all ERGT facilities
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) – Any additional PPE required for your course will be supplied by ERGT on the day.
Lunch for Full-Day Courses – Lunch is provided. Please let us know at least 24 hours in advance if you have any allergies or specific dietary requirements.
