Course Overview

The Fire Warden course gives learners the practical skills to operate as a Fire Warden within an Emergency Control Organisation (ECO) and support workplace emergency response. It covers how to participate in pre-emergency planning, conduct site inspections, respond to emergency signals, lead occupants through evacuation, and assist with post-emergency activities in accordance with workplace emergency response procedures and AS 3745 Planning for emergencies in facilities.

Fire Wardens play a critical role in workplace safety, supporting safe evacuation and coordinating the initial response to fires, alarms and other emergencies as part of a facility's Emergency Control Organisation. The half-day Fire Warden (FW) course delivered at ERGT Australia provides learners with the practical knowledge and hands-on experience required to operate as a Fire Warden as part of an ECO under AS 3745. Designed for personnel nominated as Fire Wardens across workplaces and facilities including offices, healthcare, education, industrial sites and operational facilities, this course focuses on the responsibilities of Fire Wardens within the ECO, recognising and responding to emergency signals, leading evacuation, accounting for occupants at muster points, and supporting safe re-entry in accordance with workplace emergency response procedures.

Through a combination of facilitator-led learning and practical scenario-based exercises, learners will build the confidence and capability to undertake Fire Warden duties during a workplace emergency, communicate effectively with occupants and the Chief Warden, and apply workplace emergency response procedures in line with AS 3745 Planning for emergencies in facilities. Upon successful completion, learners will be ready to operate as a Fire Warden within their workplace Emergency Control Organisation.

What to expect

Learner Support:

Learner wellbeing for this course is supported through measures that recognise the practical demands of Fire Warden training. As the course involves participating in scenario-based exercises, leading simulated evacuations and applying Fire Warden duties under workplace emergency response procedures, ERGT implements support strategies that prioritise learner safety, confidence and readiness. This ensures learners can safely participate in all practical components without compromising their wellbeing or safety.

Physical Wellbeing Support:

  • Trainers monitor learners during practical activities for signs of fatigue or difficulty when moving through evacuation routes or using stairs.
  • Learners are instructed in safe evacuation techniques, including how to assist occupants who require help to evacuate.
  • Learners are encouraged to disclose any physical concerns (e.g. fatigue, minor injury or restricted mobility) so adjustments can be made to participation.

Psychological & Emotional Wellbeing Support:

  • Trainers provide clear pre-activity briefings outlining what to expect during scenario-based exercises, including responding to simulated emergency signals.
  • Learners experiencing discomfort or uncertainty when leading occupants through evacuation are supported through additional guidance and the opportunity to observe before participating.
  • Post-activity debriefs are conducted to reinforce learning, address concerns and build confidence in performing Fire Warden duties.

Cognitive Support for Safety-Critical Tasks:

  • Structured delivery of fire safety legislation, ECO structure and roles, AS 3745 requirements and workplace emergency response procedures prior to practical application.
  • Step-by-step demonstrations of Fire Warden duties, including site inspection, alarm response, occupant communication, evacuation leadership and muster point accountability.
  • Use of visual aids, demonstrations and workplace-style scenarios to reinforce understanding of Fire Warden responsibilities within the ECO.
