Course Overview

The Utilise Emergency Breathing System Aviation Industry (AVI_UEBS) course gives learners the practical skills to safely prepare, operate and complete post-operational procedures for an aviation Emergency Breathing System (EBS). It covers how to conduct pre-flight inspection, fit and use an EBS, employ purging and safe breathing techniques, respond to equipment malfunctions, and complete after-use inspection and stowage in accordance with workplace and regulatory procedures.

Operating an aviation Emergency Breathing System is an essential aviation safety skill for personnel travelling over water by air, where the ability to deploy and use an EBS during a helicopter ditching event is critical to survival outcomes. The half-day Utilise Emergency Breathing System Aviation Industry course delivered at ERGT Australia provides learners with the practical knowledge and hands-on experience required to safely operate aviation Emergency Breathing Systems during helicopter operations over water. Designed for flight crews, maintenance and support personnel, passengers visiting offshore facilities, and emergency services personnel travelling by aircraft over water, this course focuses on EBS pre-flight inspection and preparation, EBS fitting and operation, purging techniques, safe underwater breathing, malfunction response, and post-operational procedures.

Through a combination of facilitator-led learning and practical activities in a simulated emergency in water environment, learners will build the confidence and capability to safely prepare and operate an Emergency Breathing System, manage equipment performance during use, and complete post-operational inspection and stowage in line with industry best practice. Upon successful completion, learners will be ready to aviation Utilise Emergency Breathing Systems during operations over water.

Learning Objectives

  • By the end of this course, learners will be able to:
  • Prepare an EBS for use
  • Operate an EBS
  • Complete EBS post-operational procedures

Prior Skills & Knowledge

Training Standards Pre-requisites:

There are no pre-requisites from the training standard for this course.

Medical Requirements:

This training is physically demanding and includes extensive in-water activities. A current industry-approved or HUET medical is required for participation.  Please refer to this link for more information: HUET Medical

Medicals must be provided to ERGT Australia as soon as possible after enrolling, but no later than 48 hours prior to your course commencing. Your medical can be submitted through your Learner Onboarding in aXcelerate or emailed to info@ergt.com.au

What to expect

Learner Support:

  • Learner wellbeing for this course is supported through measures that recognise the physical, cognitive, and psychological demands of aviation Emergency Breathing System training in a simulated water environment. As the course involves water immersion, submersion, sensory disruption and the use of breathing equipment underwater, ERGT implements support strategies that prioritise learner safety, confidence and readiness. This ensures learners can safely participate in all practical components without compromising their wellbeing or safety.

Physical Wellbeing Support:

  • Trainers continuously monitor learners during water-based activities for signs of fatigue, cold stress, disorientation or discomfort with breathing equipment underwater.
  • Practical activities are introduced progressively, allowing learners to become familiar with water immersion and EBS deployment before undertaking more complex tasks.
  • Learners are encouraged to disclose any physical concerns (e.g. fatigue, discomfort in water, difficulty with breath control or equalising pressure) so adjustments can be made to participation.

Psychological & Emotional Wellbeing Support:

  • Trainers provide clear pre-activity briefings to prepare learners for water immersion and underwater EBS use, including what to expect during practical activities.
  • Learners experiencing discomfort or anxiety when participating in water-based or underwater breathing activities are supported through gradual exposure, additional guidance or alternative sequencing of activities where appropriate.
  • Post-activity debriefs are conducted to reinforce learning, address concerns and build confidence in safe Emergency Breathing System use.

Cognitive Support for Safety-Critical Tasks:

  • Structured delivery of EBS principles, breathing techniques, malfunction response and post-operational procedures prior to practical application.
  • Step-by-step demonstrations of EBS use, including pre-flight inspection, fitting, purging, underwater breathing techniques and post-use procedures.
  • Use of consistent terminology, demonstrations and reinforcement of key steps to support memory retention and recall during water-based activities.
