Course Overview

The Industry Safety Induction — Virtual Classroom Delivery (ISI_VCD) is the online equivalent of ERGT's face-to-face ISI course. Delivered live over one day via virtual classroom, it provides new industry entrants with the knowledge and skills to work safely in oil and gas exploration and production facilities across WA, NT, and QLD, without the need to attend a physical training centre.

The Industry Safety Induction Virtual Classroom Delivery course at ERGT Australia is delivered under licence to Safer Together and covers the same content, certification, and learning outcomes as the face-to-face ISI. Learners participate in facilitator-led sessions, interactive discussions, and scenario-based activities in a live virtual environment. Knowledge assessments confirm understanding of safety requirements before course completion.
This course is ideal for learners who are geographically remote, cannot attend a Perth training centre, or whose employer has arranged virtual delivery as part of their onboarding process.

On successful completion of the course, learners will be issued with the following certification:

Certificate of Course Completion - Industry Safety Induction Card
Introduction to the oil and gas industry safety framework
Roles, responsibilities, and legal obligations
Hazard identification and risk management
Safe work procedures and permit-to-work systems
Emergency preparedness and incident reporting
Industry-specific safety practices and expectations

This course is delivered through a blend of:

Facilitator-led virtual classroom sessions to introduce key safety concepts.

Interactive discussions and scenario-based learning to explore industry risks.

The Industry Safety Induction — Virtual Classroom Delivery is designed for all New Starts entering the oil and gas exploration and production industry across WA, NT, or QLD.

A New Start is defined as anyone who has not worked in the Australian Energy Production Industry for at least 12 months in the last 2 years. This applies to both direct employees and contractors, and to anyone entering onshore or offshore facilities for the first time or returning after an extended absence.

The ISI must be completed before commencing work at any oil and gas operation covered by the Safer Together framework.

Returning workers who have worked in the Australian Energy Production Industry for more than 12 months in the last 2 years may be eligible to complete an Experienced Worker Declaration instead of attending the ISI. Contact your employer or visit safertogether.com.au for more information.
Participation Requirements
To participate safely and complete the course, learners should be aware of the following requirements:
Physical requirements:

Learners will be seated in a classroom environment for the majority of the day

No physical tasks, drills, or practical exercises are required

The course does not involve outdoor activity or physical exertion

Psychological requirements:

Learners will engage with case studies and scenarios that may reference serious workplace incidents, hazards, and fatalities from the oil and gas industry

Learners should be prepared to participate in group discussions about risk, safety behaviours, and industry expectations

Learners experiencing difficulty with any course content are encouraged to speak with their facilitator

Behavioural requirements:

Learners are expected to actively participate in facilitated discussions and group activities

Respectful engagement with peers and facilitators is required throughout the course

Learners must complete all knowledge assessments to receive certification

Technical Requirements
Learners must ensure the following are in place before the course begins:
Device and setup:

One device per learner, a phone cannot be the primary device

A second screen or printed copy of the Participant Workbook is required

A headset is strongly recommended

Device camera must be functional and correctly framed

Software and access:

The course is delivered via Zoom, learners must have Zoom installed and test their settings before the session begins

Zoom meeting details will be available in the announcements section of the learner portal after completing the learner onboarding in aXcelerate

Learners must open and confirm access to their editable Participant Workbook and Safety Culture Framework before the course starts

Learners must be able to type, edit, and share their Participant Workbook during the session

Connectivity:

A stable broadband connection is required for the full day

Mobile data or unreliable connections are not suitable for this course

Language, Literacy, Numeracy & Digital (LLND)
Learners must have sufficient Language, Literacy, Numeracy, and Digital (LLND) skills to understand safety procedures, engage with course materials, and complete knowledge assessments. Learners must be able to access and navigate a digital device and edit documents online. Support is available on request, contact ERGT for more information.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:
Awareness of:
The main locations and activities associated with the Natural Gas Exploration and Production Industry
The tools and systems used by the industry to help manage risk
Their roles and responsibilities as safety leaders within the Industry
The expectations the Industry places upon workers, with regard to safety, conduct and behaviour
Ability to recognise:
The primary hazards and risks found within the industry
Factors that influence their perception of risk and decision making around risk
Behaviour and conduct that may compromise their safety and the safety of others
Ability to:
Apply common industry risk management tools and strategies including safety conversations, intervening and stopping the job

Prior Skills & Knowledge

There are no formal training prerequisites for the Industry Safety Induction.

Health & Fitness:
Please complete the learner onboarding from with your enrolment which includes a medical questionnaire prior to the commencement of your course.

If during the Virtual Classroom Delivery session our facilitator observes a medical emergency or you indicate through voice or gestures you require help ERGT will contact your emergency contact as provided in the statement of participation.

Virtual ISI Requirements:
Platform for virtual delivery that supports slides and video display via screen sharing by facilitators.
Learners must open and confirm access to their editable versions of Workbook and Safety Culture Framework prior to start of the course.
Learners must be able to type / edit / share their Participants’ Workbooks.
Requirements to learners:
One student one device
One device must not be a phone
Have a second screen or a printout of the workbook
Use a headset, if possible
Login early to test settings
Learners in a location with stable broadband
Video Sharing Platform and Online Etiquettes:
Device Camera must be on and framed correctly
Look into the camera when speaking
Mute yourself when not speaking
Ensure your technology works correctly
Wear Work appropriate clothing.

What to expect

On the day

To ensure a productive session for all participants, learners are expected to observe the following during the virtual classroom:

Log in early to test your settings before the session begins
Keep your camera on and correctly framed throughout the course
Look into the camera when speaking
Mute yourself when not speaking
Wear work-appropriate clothing
Ensure you are in a quiet location with minimal interruptions for the duration of the day

Course content builds progressively across the day, moving from foundational industry knowledge through to applied risk management tools and safety leadership
Facilitators use a range of delivery methods — discussion, scenario analysis, and case studies — to support different learning styles
Learners who require additional time or support with assessments are encouraged to speak with their facilitator or contact ERGT's learner support team before the course
