Course Overview
The Lithium-Ion Battery Emergency Response Training course gives learners the practical skills to safely identify, contain and respond to emergency incidents involving lithium-ion batteries. It covers battery hazard identification, PPE and breathing apparatus use, fire suppression, containment strategies and coordinated emergency response.
Lithium-ion batteries are now widespread across consumer electronics, electric vehicles, renewable energy storage and marine propulsion systems, but a malfunction, damage or thermal event in one of these batteries introduces hazards that differ significantly from a conventional fire, including thermal runaway and battery re-ignition. The 1-day Lithium-Ion Battery Emergency Response Training course delivered at ERGT Australia provides learners with the practical knowledge and hands-on experience required to respond safely and effectively to lithium-ion battery incidents, minimising risk to personnel, property and the environment.
Through a combination of facilitator-led learning and practical exercises in a simulated emergency environment, learners will build the confidence and capability to identify and classify lithium-ion battery hazards, select and apply appropriate PPE and breathing apparatus, apply fire suppression and coordinate and communicate effectively as part of an emergency response team. Upon successful completion, learners will have confidence to respond to lithium-ion battery incidents.
This is a non-accredited course. Outcomes are assessed against ERGT Australia's performance standards and upon successful demonstration of all required performance criteria, learners are issued a Certificate of Training and Assessment by ERGT Australia.

Prior Skills & Knowledge
Training standard prerequisites:
There are no prerequisites from the training standard for this course.
ERGT prior skills and knowledge requirements:
While there are no formal entry prerequisites for this course, given the course's nature as a skills maintenance program, it is essential that learners hold current certification before enrolling.

- MSMWHS216 Operate breathing apparatus, or PUAFIR207 Operate breathing apparatus open circuit
Firefighting and Emergency Response
- PMAWHS213 Undertake fire control and emergency rescue

- Prior completion of an ERGT Australia-approved skills maintenance course in the relevant areas is accepted in lieu of the above units.
Evidence of prior certification in each area must be provided before course commencement.

Learner Support:
Learner wellbeing for this course is supported through measures that recognise the physical, cognitive and psychological demands of responding to a simulated lithium-ion battery emergency. As the course involves extended use of breathing apparatus and firefighting equipment, and performance in realistic fire and thermal-event scenarios, ERGT implements support strategies that prioritise learner safety, confidence and readiness.
Physical Wellbeing Support:
· Trainers continuously monitor learners for signs of fatigue, discomfort or heat stress while wearing PPE and operating breathing apparatus
· Breathing apparatus fit, seal and comfort are checked before and throughout practical sessions, with trainer support for adjustment where required
· Learners are encouraged to disclose any physical concerns so adjustments can be made to participation
Psychological & Emotional Wellbeing Support:
· Trainers provide clear pre-scenario briefings covering safety controls, emergency procedures and expected activities before simulated fire exercises
· Learners experiencing discomfort or anxiety around simulated fire, smoke or heat are supported through additional guidance or adjusted sequencing of activities where appropriate
· Post-scenario debriefs are conducted to reinforce learning, address concerns and build confidence in safe response practices
Cognitive Support for Equipment-Critical Tasks:
· Step-by-step demonstration of lithium-ion battery hazard identification, isolation and suppression equipment before learners apply it in scenarios
· Gradual progression from theory and equipment familiarisation to full simulated incident response
· Opportunities to rehearse containment and suppression techniques before executing them in scenario-based exercises
