Course Overview

The Perform Peripheral Intravenous Cannulation course gives learners the practical skills to safely prepare for, perform, monitor and document peripheral intravenous cannulation in clinical and emergency response settings. It covers how to identify clients and authorised requests, prepare clients and equipment, apply aseptic technique, perform peripheral IV cannulation, monitor cannulae in-situ, manage complications, and document care in accordance with workplace procedures, infection control standards and clinical governance frameworks.

Performing peripheral intravenous cannulation is a specialist clinical procedure capability required for clinical and emergency response personnel working in remote and industrial environments, where the ability to safely establish and manage venous access is critical to patient outcomes. The 1-day Perform Peripheral Intravenous Cannulation (PPIC) course delivered at ERGT Australia combines self-paced online learning with a 1-day face-to-face practical session to provide learners with the practical knowledge and hands-on experience required to perform peripheral IV cannulation within their authorised scope of practice. Designed for Emergency Services Officers (ESOs), site medics and clinical personnel in Mining, Resources, and other high-risk, remote, or industrial environments, this course focuses on legal, ethical and organisational requirements, infection control and aseptic technique, equipment selection and preparation, the cannulation procedure, monitoring and post-procedure care, and managing complications and escalation in accordance with workplace procedures and clinical governance frameworks.

Through a combination of online theoretical learning and facilitator-led practical training in a controlled environment, learners will build the confidence and capability to safely perform peripheral IV cannulation, monitor cannulae in-situ, manage complications, and document patient care in line with industry best practice. Upon successful completion, learners will be capable and confident to perform peripheral intravenous cannulation as part of their clinical or emergency response role within their authorised scope of practice.

Learning Objectives

  • By the end of this course, learners will be able to:
  • Prepare for peripheral intravenous cannulation
  • Perform peripheral intravenous cannulation
  • Monitor peripheral intravenous cannula in-situ

What to expect

Learner Support:

Learner wellbeing for this course is supported through measures that recognise the cognitive and procedural demands of clinical training. As the course involves performing fine-motor clinical procedures, applying aseptic technique, and managing simulated patients in realistic clinical scenarios, ERGT implements support strategies that prioritise learner safety, confidence and readiness. This ensures learners can fully participate in all practical components without compromising their wellbeing or readiness to perform clinical procedures.

Physical Wellbeing Support:

  • Trainers monitor learners during practical activities for signs of fatigue, postural strain or difficulty sustaining concentration during procedural exercises.
  • Scheduled breaks are incorporated between practical activities to support recovery and manage the demands of fine-motor concentration.
  • Learners are encouraged to disclose any physical concerns (e.g. fatigue, postural discomfort, manual dexterity concerns) so adjustments can be made to participation.

Psychological & Emotional Wellbeing Support:

  • Trainers provide clear pre-activity briefings to prepare learners for clinical scenarios, including expected procedural demands and the level of clinical realism.
  • Learners experiencing difficulty sustaining concentration or applying procedural steps are supported through additional guidance, mentoring or alternative scenario sequencing where appropriate.
  • Post-activity debriefs are conducted to reinforce learning, address concerns and build confidence in safe clinical practice.

Cognitive Support for Safety-Critical Tasks:

  • Structured online delivery of clinical knowledge, infection control principles and procedural requirements prior to practical application.
  • Step-by-step demonstrations of cannulation, including client identification, equipment preparation, aseptic technique, cannula insertion, monitoring and post-procedure care.
  • Use of consistent terminology, demonstrations and reinforcement of key steps to support memory retention and recall during clinical practice.
