Course Overview
The Command the Operation of a Survival Craft – Swing Arm course gives learners the practical skills to take command of a Totally Enclosed Motor Propelled Survival Craft (TEMPSC) launched and lowered by swing arm system, during the evacuation of an offshore facility or vessel. It covers how to control the muster, conduct organised TEMPSC deployment, provide leadership during launch and onboard the craft, control hazards arising from the abandonment, and respond to problems before, during and after launch in accordance with maritime regulatory requirements and workplace procedures.
Commanding the operation of a survival craft is a specialist maritime emergency response capability required across maritime and offshore industries, where personnel may be required to take leadership of a TEMPSC during the evacuation of an offshore facility or vessel in marine emergency conditions. The 2-day Command the Operation of a Survival Craft – Swing Arm (COSC_SWING) course delivered at ERGT Australia provides learners with the practical knowledge and hands-on experience required to command the launch and operation of a swing arm TEMPSC. Designed for seafarers, offshore personnel and shipboard crew in Maritime, Offshore Oil and Gas, and Resource sectors where swing arm-launched lifeboats are installed on vessels or facilities, this course focuses on muster control, pre-launch checks and crew briefings, swing arm launch and lowering procedures, post-launch manoeuvring and navigation, command and welfare of personnel onboard, hazard control, and recovery procedures in accordance with maritime regulatory requirements.
Through a combination of facilitator-led learning and practical training on a swing arm-launched TEMPSC in a simulated marine environment, learners will build the confidence and capability to take command of a swing arm-launched survival craft, lead a crew during launch and lowering, manage hazards and emergencies arising from the abandonment, and prepare craft and personnel for safe recovery in line with industry best practice. Upon successful completion, learners will be job-ready to command the operation of a swing arm-launched TEMPSC during marine emergency response.

Prior Skills & Knowledge
Training Standard Pre-requisites:
There are no pre-requisites from the training standard for this course.
What to expect
Learner Support:
- Learner wellbeing for this course is supported through measures that recognise the physical, cognitive and psychological demands of TEMPSC command training in a simulated marine environment. As the course involves davit launch and lowering from height, operating within an enclosed survival craft, taking command of crew during simulated evacuation, and managing post-launch hazards across a 2-day program, ERGT implements support strategies that prioritise learner safety, confidence and readiness. This ensures learners can safely participate in all practical components without compromising their wellbeing or safety.
Physical Wellbeing Support:
- Trainers continuously monitor learners during practical activities for signs of fatigue, motion sickness, height anxiety or restricted movement while wearing PPE within the enclosed survival craft.
- Practical activities are structured to include pre-launch briefings and rest periods between TEMPSC evolutions to manage cognitive load and physical demand across both training days.
- PPE fit and comfort, including life jackets, immersion suits and helmets, are checked before and throughout practical sessions, with trainer support for adjustment where required.
- Learners are encouraged to disclose any physical concerns (e.g. fatigue, motion sickness, height anxiety, restricted movement) so adjustments can be made to participation.
Psychological & Emotional Wellbeing Support:
- Trainers provide clear pre-activity briefings to prepare learners for davit launch and lowering, enclosed-craft operation and command scenarios, including safety controls in place.
- Learners experiencing discomfort or anxiety when participating in davit launch and lowering, enclosed-craft activities or simulated emergency scenarios are supported through gradual exposure, additional guidance or alternative sequencing of activities where appropriate.
- Post-activity debriefs are conducted to reinforce learning, address concerns and build confidence in safe TEMPSC command practices.
Cognitive Support for Safety-Critical Tasks:
- Structured delivery of TEMPSC operating principles, swing arm launch and lowering system theory, muster control, navigation and command requirements prior to practical application.
- Step-by-step demonstrations of muster control, pre-launch checks, swing arm launch and lowering sequences, post-launch manoeuvring and recovery procedures.
- Use of visual aids, demonstrations and real equipment to reinforce understanding of safe TEMPSC command practices during marine emergency response.
